15. GRANDMOTHER IS ANGRY -

  1. /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /ɪz/ /ˈæŋɡri/
    Kim must look everywhere
    Kim /məst/ /lʊk/   /ˈevriweə(r)/

‘O-o-oh!’ cried Kim. ‘My umbrella! My father’s umbrella’.
    /kraɪd/ Kim. ‘/maɪ/ /ʌmˈbrelə/ ‘/maɪ/ /ˈfɑːðər/ /ʌmˈbrelə/
    She looked around quickly.
    /ʃi/  /lʊk/ /əˈraʊnd/  /ˈkwɪkli/
She saw Mrs Parks and ran to her.
    /ʃi/  /sɔː/ /ˈmɪsɪz/ /pɑːk/ /ənd/ /ræn/  /tuː/ /hər/
The big boy, who was mending books, was not there.
    /ðə/ /bɪɡ/ /bɔɪ/ /huː/ /wəz/ /mend/ /bʊk/ /wəz/ /nɒt/ /ðeə(r)/
    Mrs Parks was alone.
    /ˈmɪsɪz/ /pɑːk/ /wəz/ /əˈləʊn/
Mrs Parks jumped up from her chair.
    /ˈmɪsɪz/ /pɑːk/  /dʒʌmp/ /ʌp/  /frəm/ /hə(r)/  /tʃeə(r)/
‘What’s the matter, Kim?’ she asked.
    /wɒt/ /ðə/  /ˈmætə(r)/. Kim /ʃi/  /ɑːsk/
‘What’s wrong?’ Kim began to cry.
    /wɒt/  /rɒŋ/  Kim  /bɪˈɡæn/ /tuː/ /kraɪ/
Big tears ran down her face. ‘My umbrella,’ she cried.
    /bɪɡ/ /teə(r)/ /ræn/ /daʊn/ /hə(r)/  /feɪs/. /maɪ/ /ʌmˈbrelə/, /ʃi/  /kraɪd/
‘My father’s big, black umbrella has gone.’
    /maɪ/ /ˈfɑːðər/ /bɪɡ/, /blæk/ /ʌmˈbrelə/ /həz/  /ɡɔːn/
Kim pointed to the box for wet umbrellas.
    Kim  /ˈpɔɪntɪd/ /tuː/ /ðə/  /bɒks/  /fə(r)/ /wet/ /ʌmˈbrelə/
‘I left it there in the corner.
    /aɪ/ /left/ /ɪt/ /ðeə(r)/ /ɪn/ /ðə/ /ˈkɔːnə(r)/
    I forgot it.
    /aɪ/ /fəˈɡɒt/ /ɪt/
I forgot it when I went home.
    /aɪ/ /fəˈɡɒt/ /ɪt/ /wen/  /aɪ/   /went/ /həʊm/
I came back quickly, but it’s not here.’
    /aɪ/ /keɪm/ /bæk/  /ˈkwɪkli/, /bət/ /ɪt/ /nɒt/ /hɪə(r)/
Kim looked inside to the box.
    Kim /lʊk/  /ˌɪnˈsaɪd/ /tuː/ /ðə/ /bɒks/
    She looked behind the box.
    /ʃi/  /lʊk/ /bɪˈhaɪnd/ /ðə/ /bɒks/
    She looked under the box.
    /ʃi/  /lʊk/  /ˈʌndə(r)/ /ðə/ /bɒks/
But the umbrella was not there.
    /bət/ /ðə/ /ʌmˈbrelə/ /wəz/ /nɒt/ /ðeə(r)/
    Kim ran around the room.
    Kim /ræn/  /əˈraʊnd/ /ðə/  /ruːm/
The library teacher was trying to catch her.
    /ðə/  /ˈlaɪbrəri/  /ˈtiːtʃə(r)/ /wəz/ /ˈtraɪɪŋ/ /tuː/ /kætʃ/ /hə(r)/
But the umbrella was not in the Children’s Library.
    /bət/ /ðə/ /ʌmˈbrelə/ /wəz/ /nɒt/ /ɪn/ /ðə/ /ˈtʃɪldrən/ /ˈlaɪbrəri/
There was nowhere to hide it in there.
    /ðeə(r)/ /wəz/ /ˈnəʊweə(r)/ tuː/ /haɪd/ /ɪt/ /ɪn/ /ðeə(r)/
They went downstairs to the Adults’ Library.
    /ðeɪ/ /went/ /ˌdaʊnˈsteəz/ /tuː/ /ðə/ /ˈædʌlt/ /ˈlaɪbrəri/  .
They looked for the umbrella, but it was not there, either.
    /ðeɪ/ /lʊk/  /fə(r)/ /ðə/  /ʌmˈbrelə/, /bət/  /ɪt/ /wəz/ /nɒt/ /ðeə(r)/,  /ˈaɪðə(r)/
Now Kim could not stop her tears.
    /naʊ/ Kim /kəd/ /nɒt/ /stɒp/ /hə(r)/  /teə(r)/.
The library teacher said, ‘Oh, Kim, I’m sorry you have lost the umbrella.
    /ðə/  /ˈlaɪbrəri/ /ˈtiːtʃə(r)/ /sed/ Oh, Kim, /aɪm/ /ˈsɒri/  /ju/ /həv/ /lɒst/ /ðə/  /ʌmˈbrelə/
I don’t know who took it.
    /aɪ/ /dəʊnt/ /nəʊ/ /huː/ /tʊk/ /ɪt/
But perhaps he will bring it back.
    /bət/   /pəˈhæps/ /hi/ /wɪl/ /brɪŋ/ /ɪt/ /bæk/
There are honest people in the world.’
    /ðeə(r)/ /ɑː(r)/ /ˈɒnɪst/ /ˈpiːpl/ /ɪn/ /ðə/ /wɜːld/.
But Kim was still crying. ‘My Grandmother will hit me,’ she said.
    /bət/   Kim /wəz/ /stɪl/ /ˈkraɪɪŋ/. /maɪ/ /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /wɪl/ /hɪt/ /mi/, /ʃi/  /sed/
Mrs Parks said, ‘Tell your Grandmother what happened.
    /ˈmɪsɪz/ /pɑːk/ /sed/ , /tel/ /jɔː(r)/ /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)//wɒt//ˈhæpən/
Tell her that someone took the umbrella.
    /tel/ /hə(r)/ /ðæt/ /ˈsʌmwʌn/ /tʊk/  /ðə/ /ʌmˈbrelə/
Tell your Grandmother that the man might bring it back.’
    /tel/ /jɔː(r)/ /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /ðæt/ /ðə/ /mæn/ /maɪt/ /brɪŋ/ /ɪt/ /bæk/
Kim went home. Quickly she spoke to Grandmother in Chinese.
    Kim /went/ /həʊm/ ./ˈkwɪkli/ /ʃi/  /spəʊk/  /tuː/ /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /ɪn/ /ˌtʃaɪˈniːz/
She explained that someone took the umbrella.
    /ʃi/  /ɪkˈspleɪn/ /ðæt/  /ˈsʌmwʌn/ /tʊk/ /ðə/ /ʌmˈbrelə/
She said, ‘Perhaps he will bring it back.’
    /ʃi/  /sed/, /pəˈhæps/ /hi/ /wɪl/ /brɪŋ/ /ɪt/ /bæk/
    Grandmother hit Kim.
    /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /hɪt/ Kim
She said, ‘I did not want you to take the umbrella, You took it to the library.
    /ʃi/ /sed/, /aɪ/ /dɪd/ /nɒt/ /wɒnt/ /ju/  /tuː/ /teɪk/  /ðə/ /ʌmˈbrelə/,  /ju/ /tʊk/ /ɪt/  /tuː/ /ðə/ /ˈlaɪbrəri/
Now you must go out again and look for it.
    /naʊ/ /ju/ /məst/ /ɡəʊ/ /aʊt/  /əˈɡen/ /ənd/ /lʊk/ /fɔːr//ɪt/.
    You must look in Chinatown.
    /ju/ /məst/ /lʊk/  /ɪn/ /ˈtʃaɪnətaʊn/
    You must look everywhere.
    /ju/ /məst/  /lʊk/ /ˈevriweə(r)/.
    You must find that umbrella.’
    /ju/ /məst/ /faɪnd/  /ðæt/  /ʌmˈbrelə/
Kim went back to the library again.
    Kim /went/ /bæk/ /tuː/ /ðə/ /ˈlaɪbrəri/ /əˈɡen/.
She did not know what to do.
    /ʃi/ /dɪd/ /nɒt/ /nəʊ/ /wɒt/ /tuː/ /duː/.
She thought, ‘Perhaps the library teacher was right.
    /ʃi/ /θɔːt/, /pəˈhæps/ /ðə/ /ˈlaɪbrəri/ /ˈtiːtʃə(r)/ /wəz/ /raɪt/.
Perhaps someone has brought back the umbrella.
    /pəˈhæps/ /ˈsʌmwʌn/ /həz/ /brɔːt/ /bæk/  /ðə/  /ʌmˈbrelə/
Perhaps his grandmother has hit him for stealing it.’
    /pəˈhæps/  /hɪz/ /ˈɡrænmʌðə(r)/ /həz/ /hɪt/ /hɪm/ /fə(r)/ /stiːl/ /ɪt/
But the umbrella was still not there.
    /bət/ /ðə/  /ʌmˈbrelə/ /wəz//stɪl/ /nɒt/  /ðeə(r)/
